Stunning Vintage Rare Gieves Ltd Cape. The most accurate name for this beautiful piece is boat cloak. It is black, made of the finest wool with a velvet collar with openings/slits for the hands. There are 4 buttons down the front and an ornamental fastening collar made of 2 gold-tone metal stylised flowers and a chain with a hook. Beautiful red silk satin lining.
A very interesting fact about this piece is that it was made by Gieves Ltd, before it acquired Hawkes & Co in 1974 and become Gieves & Hawkes. Gieves Ltd had a long history of collaboration with the Royal Military and the Royal Family (as for Hawkes & Co). In 1953, the Queen Elizabeth II had a boat cloak commissioned for her in celebration of her coronation and has been widely photographed wearing it throughout the decades. The cloak is now attributed to Gieves & Hawkes, however, as they only joined forces in 1974, it had to be made by only one of them. This piece for sale is almost identical to the one worn by the Queen, the only visible difference being the 4 buttons down the front – the Royal cloak has metal buttons and this piece has wool covered buttons. Please refer to the pictures above – 1953 and 1968 by Cecil Beaton and 2007 by Annie Leibovitz.
This is a magnificent example of impeccable tailoring and a collector’s piece.
